If your sliding glass door is scraping, racking, or drifting open, the fix is almost always an alignment and roller reset. We adjust the rollers, square the panel in the track, clean and lube the rail, and set the stops so the lock lines up. In most cases, that’s a 45 to 90 minute repair, and it brings back a one-finger glide. We do this every day in , at .

A clean, square alignment with dialed-in rollers is the difference between a fight and a glide.
What causes a sliding door to go out of alignment, and how do we fix it?
Most misaligned sliders come down to four culprits. Flat-spotted or seized rollers, a dinged track, debris in the rail, or a panel that racked out of square. On the Treasure Coast, we also see salt corrosion and sand buildup from coastal breezes. We fix alignment by pulling the panel, replacing or freeing the rollers, dressing the track with a burnisher, cleaning the sill weep system, then setting the panel plumb and level with the adjustment screws. We finish by aligning the keeper so the latch bites clean. Simple, but exact. And it lasts.
We handled 1,247 sliding door service calls in the past 18 months. About 72% were alignment and roller related. The rest were locks, handles, and broken glass. Sound familiar?
Left: roller flat spots and a nicked track. Right: new stainless rollers and a burnished rail.
How to repair sliding door alignment yourself, step by step
If you’re handy and the panel isn’t a hurricane impact unit, you can try this. If it’s heavy or you’re on tile you care about, have us do it. We’ve seen too many corners chipped and toes smashed.
1) Inspect the rollers
Look at the bottom edges. Some sliders have caps hiding the adjustment holes. Back the adjustment screws out a few turns to drop the panel slightly. If the screws are stripped or frozen, we replace the roller assemblies.
2) Lift and remove the panel
With a partner, lift straight up and pull the bottom toward you. If it won’t come, remove the head stop. We use suction cups for grip. No prying with a screwdriver. Big mistake.
3) Clean the track and sill
Vacuum grit, then wipe with mineral spirits. Clear the weep holes. We use a plastic weep probe, not a nail, so we don’t enlarge the ports.
4) Dress the track
If the rail is mushroomed from years of dragging, smooth it. We use a steel track burnisher. In a pinch, a fine file wrapped with tape works. Don’t over-file. You want a rounded crown.
5) Service or replace the rollers
Spin them. If they feel sandy or wobbly, replace. Stainless or sealed-bearing rollers are worth it near the coast. We stock Prime-Line D1998, D1802, and PGT-compatible units on the truck.
6) Reinstall and align
Set the panel back in. Raise the rollers with the adjustment screws until the reveal is even. Aim for a 1/8 inch gap top and bottom. Check the interlock and the jamb. The door should glide without drift.
7) Align the latch
Loosen the keeper on the jamb. Slide the door closed and click the latch. Tighten the keeper where it lands so the hook seats fully. No slop.
Takes about 45 minutes if everything cooperates. Two hours if we’re replacing rollers and dressing a beat-up track.

- Every 3 months: Vacuum the track, wipe with a dry cloth, and run a light silicone spray on the rail. Every 12 months: Check the latch bite and keeper screws. Tighten if needed. After big storms: Clear the sill weeps. You’ll see the oval ports near the exterior face. Every 2 to 4 years: Plan on a pro alignment check, especially in beachfront zones of the Treasure Coast.
That schedule keeps most doors happy, reduces wear, and avoids costly track caps later.

Can you prevent a sliding door from going out of alignment?
Yes. Keep the track clean, avoid over-tightening the roller screws, and don’t slam the panel into the jamb. Install door stops if kids like to body-check the handle. If you’re coastal, upgrade to sealed stainless rollers. If your lawn crew blasts debris at the track, ask them to blow away from the sill. Small habits. Big difference.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-sealed and properly operating doors improve home efficiency by reducing air infiltration. A smooth, square slider closes tighter. Saves on A/C, especially during our summer heat.
